Posting digital pictures for peer help with structural problems

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
I think we all agree that posting pictures or other graphics on a
Listservice is inappropriate. The most important reason is that your upload
would automatically be forwarded to each subscriber automatically and
everyone would receive the attachments whether they want it or not. If they
have a particularly slow modem connection, this can create an annoying and
frustrating experience - especially if many people choose to do this at the
same time.
The Structuralist.Net Professional Forum has an "Open Forum" where you can
post your message as well as upload attachments. There is a size limitation,
but I watch this and adjust the size as needed. Not only can you upload the
attachments, you can embed the pictures (or any GIF, JPG or any of the
conventional formats) directly into your message to embellish it with any
explanation you need. Here are some suggestions that will make the
experience easier and will also not use up the limited storage space that I
am paying for:

1. Make sure you "tweak" your uploads to be as small in size as possible.
Most of the graphics that show very well on your internet browser are less
than 50K in size. You do not need to upload a one-megabyte graphic as this
is a waste of space.

2. When you enter your message and post it, you have a choice at the bottom
of the message to "Preview your post and /or attach a file". Pressing the
browse button will present a file explorer for your hard drive. Locate the
graphic file (or PDF or DOC or whatever you are uploading) and click the
affirmative button which will accept the file. If there are numerous files,
please Zip them together for uploading.
The file(s) will be copied from your hard drive to the directory on our
server will it becomes linked to your message and stays until the message is
deleted or the attachment removed.

3. If you wish to embed the picture into the message, you must use an
UltraCode which occurs at the right of the message box. The UB Code appears
in the message as [img="http://";]. The http:// needs to be filled in. This
represents the location of your graphic. If it already exists on a website,
simply enter the address of the graphic. If you don't know the address,
right click on the graphic and choose properties. There will be a URL
location shown for the graphic (unless it is protected). You can highlight
and copy the URL link and paste it into the UBCode above. If this is a
graphic that you intend to upload, post your message first to upload the
graphic. Modify your post by clicking on the Modify button in the upper
right of the message subject line. You will see the link to the graphic in
the lower right. You can right click this link and "copy shortcut" which you
then paste into the UBCode noted above. The downside is that you can only
load one photo that you uploaded to the forum, but you can embed any number
of graphics if they are referenced from another website. IF YOU HAVE A
SERVER WHERE YOU CAN STORE THE PHOTOS, I RECOMMEND THAT YOU REFERENCE THIS
ADDRESS RATHER THAN ATTEMPT THE UPLOAD.

4. Finally, you should post your question again on any of the Listservices
or discussion forums that you are seeking peer requests from (and many of
these are posted on the http://www.structuralist.net website in the
Professional Discussion page.
In you post to the Lists simply include the link to your message. NOTE: Many
of the Lists only allow plane text submittals. A long link will be broken
into two lines. You need to inform the reader to remove the line break to
activate the link, OR an easier way would be to simply drag the link from
your browser (showing your discussion menu) over to your email message where
it will become an attachment. Readers need only click on the attachment to
be taken directly to your message.

USE MUST REGISTER ON THE STRUCTURALIST.NET DISCUSSION FORUM TO POST OR REPLY
TO MESSAGES. YOU NEED NOT REGISTER TO SIMPLY READ OR REVIEW MESSAGES.

I hope this will help those of you who would like to provide clarification
to your questions by the use of photos, PDF files, spreadsheets or virtually
 any upload.

WARNING: UPLOADS ARE NOT VERIFIED TO BE VIRUS FREE. USERS ARE WARNED TO RUN
A VIRUS CHECK ON ALL FILES DOWNLOADED FROM ANY OF THE FORUMS.
