That's why architects like 1.25 std. (schedule 40) pipe - the outside diameter is 1.66"
The O.D. of 1.5" pipe is 1.9", which some say is hard to grip.
 
Fabricators and contractors like that size because it can sit on a MC12x10.6 stringer (which will usually work as the center stringers for double flight stairs).
