FWIW, a couple of years ago I joined AWS for the same reason: The AWS D1.1 standard was something like $90 for non-members, but if you joined AWS for $40, you could have it for $20. AND get the magazine for free. AND get a three- or four-volume set of "welding metallurgy" free. AND get reduced prices on other publications (got the Rebar and the Bridge Welding Code for pretty cheap).
