RE: Oversize bolt holes

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
Per RCSC Spec, for 1" diameter and smaller A490, use std thickness F436 washers. For A490's 1-1/8" diameter or greater, use hardened steel washer (F436) 5/16" thick. These thicknesses apply for oversized holes. Std thicknesses range depending upon diameter, but for washers for 3/4" through 1-1/2" diameter bolts, expect washers to be around 0.15 inches thick (there is a range permitted).

Does anyone know the requirement for the washer thickness for oversize bolt holes if I used A-490 bolt and the steel is A-992 grade 50ksi.

See "July 1999 Steel Tips"
For 3/4" dia. bolt use 5/16" oversize
1 to 2" dia. use 1/2" oversize
over 2" dia. use 1" oversize
Washers are required (weld washers if
transferring shear)

Pages 4-130 and 4-131 discuss over sizing anchor bolt holes. The AISC steel
design guide series 1 "Column Base Plates" suggests using an additional 1/4"
diameter over those given in the Manual and a heavy plate washer (5/16" to
1/2") is used.

Can anyone direct me to the section of the AISC 9th ed. that discusses
limits for oversizing bolt holes. I looked at J3 and Table J3.1 and the
commentary but was unable to find any indication as to the allowable amount
that a hole/slot may be oversized (diameter/width and length), just that
they may be oversized at column bases.

Thanks
