What you are "missing" is a matter of naming convention; many people
use the same name for two very different things.

The perforated shear walls described in your APA reference are those
for which an empirical design approach is provided in the 2000 IBC and
the 2000 NEHRP Recommended Provisions (among other places).  [In the
IBC this is called "no force transfer around openings."]

The perforated shear walls that Gerard mentioned and for which the
extensive calculations are required are those with "force transfer
around openings" (to quote the IBC).  Where the design includes
explicit calculation of forces at openings (and provides suitable
strapping, etc.) the aspect ratio limits apply to the entire wall
(including openings) and to the wall piers measured from bottom to top
of opening (not bottom to top of wall).

is that right?  my apa report (dated april 2000) defines a perforated
shearwall segment as "a section of shearwall with full height
sheathing and
which meets minimum aspect ratio requirements in the governing
building
code".  it also states that "a perforated shearwall segment of minimum
length must be located at each end of a perforated shearwall".

i agree that there can be skinny segments in the interior portion of
the
wall, but their lengths can't be included in the summation of
shearwall
segments - right?

am i missing something here?
