Fire Rating of Steel Doors

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next] This may seem like a silly question but:

I need to install a new door for a condo  (Arlington County, Virginia which uses Boca 96).  It is the entrance door from the condo to the (interior) corridor.  Per Boca,  Table 1011.4, Use Group R,  the Corridor Fire Resistance Rating (with sprinker system) is 1/2 hour so per table 717.1,  the door only needs to be rated for 20 minutes.

The steel doors at Home Depot indicate that they are rated for 1-1/2 hours but apparently the Home Depot staff says that the doors do not necessarily comply with county requirements for fire rating.  What other county fire requirements are there likely to be?  If a door is rated for 1-1/2 hours wouldn't it also qualify for a 20 minute requirement?

Going to the county building department and actually asking somebody is always a last resort ...
