Thanks to all that responded including two of you who were kind enough to fax me the section or a calculation to demonstrate the code method.
I am thankful to all of you for your kind help.

1997 NDS Section 8.2.3 Wood-to-Concrete Connections now refers you to
table 8.2E where design values are tabulated for you.
