Alden,

I know that this wasn't what you asked, but just in case you don't know this
(I only recently found this out, but fortunately have not done much design
with aluminum), if your base plate is welded to the column make sure that
you reduce the allowable bending stresses within 1" of the welds. The
required reduction is significant.
