How about tabs like the UBC/IBC? I like the thumb cuts, but it would be cool to also have tabs for each chapter or steel shape type so I don't have to make my own. I think UBC sells theirs for around 10 bucks, although, I usually just end up smashing them to oblivion after a few months.

the production and we the public is there with 
the elimination of the thumbcuts? 
 
Thumb cuts cost about a dollar per book to make and add about 3 months to the printing process for a run of 30,000.
