RE: Doubler Plate Plug Welds

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
The size and spacing limitations for plug welds is given in ASD
Specification Section J2.3.
The "ol' Red" Engineering for Steel Construction book also gives a spacing
limitation for plug welds
of 127/Fy x min(doubler plate thickness, column web thickness).

There is valuable discussion about the pros and cons of doubler plates in
Blodgett's "Design of Welded
Structures" and the Engineering for Steel Construction book. Charlie Carter
also has some interesting
information about web doublers in AISC's Steel Design Guide 13, "Stiffening
of Wide-Flange Columns at
Moment Connections: Wind and Seismic Applications".

Subject: Doubler Plate Plug Welds

AISC Provisions discuss Plug welds for connecting doubler plates to the
column web. I can find no criteria for size, location, or number of these
plug welds. Any Help?
