That's not the problem though. The problem is that if you have multiple
views of a single XREF some of which require more detail than others,
there's no other way to turn layers on/off for just a certain view.

With Paperspace you can do that.

Glad you understand now.

By the way, to freeze layers within an xref can be done quite easily without
viewports & paperspace. All you have to do is Type "VISRETAIN" at the
command prompt and then type "1" it won't forget what layers you froze next
time you open the drawing.
