Gordon,

Unlike steel, this shear force can become VERY difficult to transfer within
wood members. Make sure you run all the numbers before agreeing to
anything.

You can add two beams together as long as you check the horizontal shear
between them and connect them accordingly.

Hi

I am trying to assist a contractor who purchased 8x8 beams instead of the
8x12 beam called for in the design. Is it possible to add a 4x8 to the top
of the 8x8 by gluing and bolting the two members together? Should the
allowable flexural strength be reduced? Thanks for your help.

Gordon
