Re: Concrete Shear Wall Below Grade; In-Plane / Out-of-Plane Behavior

SYED,

Your answer is wrong if they are co-existing loadings which they would
appear to be from the post. The same reinforcement cannot be loaded to
yield for the vertical load condition and the horizontal load condition at
the same time. You need to calculate both areas of reinforcement and add
them together for the faces/areas that are in tension due to both the
horizontal load condition and vertical load condition.

Rogers,

Why not!?

Analyse for both; and you should detail according to the requirements of
the case that governs. In this way you would have taken good care of both
the forces.

Hope that helps.

To all those informed concrete designers out there.....here's a question
for you........(an item of discussion & debate)

Deep, reinforced concrete basement shear wall which is also experiencing
out-of-plane loading from the soil. Shear wall design indicates the
need for horizontal and vertical stirrups as well as flexural steel in
either end of the shear wall. The vertical stirrups act as shear
reinforcement to resist the in-plane shear load. Can these same
stirrups be used as flexural reinforcement for the out-of-plane loading
from the soil ? Not addressed in the PCA Notes on ACI 318-99 and have
found nothing in three textbooks addressing the issue.

Thanks
Robert
