You're blind if you can't see that it gets paid one way or the other.
Government sponsored programs cost the public more, but it also is
necessary because private industry when not regulated takes advantage of
the public. Hasn't the last few years of number tumbling proven that
private industry can't be trusted to protect those who invest in their
products (stocks and securities). 

It never goes free. It is either paid for in the cost of the product,
the services of the government or the non-profit organizations who
provide it. Nothing in life is free - the question is whose
responsibility it is to pay for it and each of the above - you and I pay
for it. It is less restrictive on us to absorb the cost in the product
not in the service.
