I think slabs on metal deck are actually a little like slabs on ground.  Although there is restraint at the bottom from the metal deck, there is differential shrinkage through the thickness of the slab, which sometimes results in cracking at the top of the slab.

There has not been a lot of research on slabs on metal decks, maybe because it is a hybrid product that neither side is strongly pushing.  

PCA has sponsored alot of  research on slabs on ground, because slabs on ground account for alot of cement consumption.  FHWA has sponsored a lot of research on concrete pavement because they have to do something to justify their existence and get rid of the money they collect from the Gas Tax.
