Re: Weld shelf requirement

See AISC LRFD 3rd Ed. p. 8-15 for discussion of minimum shelf dimensions. It appears that for SMAW fillet welds, they show weld size + 1/4". SAW requires greater shelf for the flux.

I have always used D+1/16, as I understand it, if the shelf or plate thickness is the same as the weld size, then the value of the weld is reduced by 10%

Subject: Weld shelf requirement

What is the weld "shelf" minimum dimension required for a fillet weld? It is my understanding that the fillet weld size plus 5/16" (cf: 1/4" fillet plus 5/16" equals a 9/16" total shelf required) is the minimum recommended shelf for a fillet weld, but is that a requirement in the AWS or and other standard or code?
Thank you.
