RE: wood beam reinforcement

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
Hi Irv,

Are you using an adhesive because of appearance?

Regardless of using or not using adhesive, I still like to mechanically anchor the new member to the existing member either using #12 or #14 screws, or thru bolts. Liquid nails could also be used as a secondary source of bond.

If the span is somewhat long, I would also recommend that you shore the existing beam a little beyond level when you reinforce it to provide a camber. When the shoring is removed, the new beam system should come down near level.

Good luck,

Fellow Engineers:
Have you had experience or can provide some advice re
using an adhesive such as resorcinol, to sister a 2x12
to one side of an existing double 2x12 wood beam?
There will be a large concentrated load only on the
existing beam.

Thx,
Irv
