Ken,

There is a way to do this without two cells of input or VBA.  Here's an example:

First, input your dimenstion in feet and inches (ie. 12'-3 1/16") into cell B2.

Then, copy the following formula into cell D2:  =LEFT(B2,FIND(CHAR(39),B2)-1)+(MID(B2,FIND("-",B2)+1,FIND(CHAR(34),B2)-FIND("-",B2)-1))/12

Cell D2 will now give the the decimal feet equivalent to the input in cell A2

Hope this helps.

Tripp Howard

P.S. I got this from a post on the eng-tips forum a while back (www.eng-tips.com

thread770-5834).  All credit is due to Mala who posted it there.

Do any of you know of a simple way of inputting feet and inches in Excel? I currently separate the two into two different cells but think that there must be an easier way. (I don't want to convert to decimal feet or use all inches)
