Re: Beams intersected by Chevron brace in a SCBF

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
I suggest you look at the 2002 AISC Seismic Provisions. (Free for download
from AISC.org) The Commentary for SCBF's provides a discussion of zipper
columns and two-story X-braces, both of which take the unbalanced force
from the buckled compression brace as axial loads as opposed to flexural
loads.

Hello,

Can you please provide your comments regarding
designing a beam intersected by Chevron brace in a
SCBF for unbalance force requirement (UBC 2213.9.4.1
item 3) - what are some possible options to minimize
the beam size?

Following are some of my ideas:

1. If beam has moment end connections, consider beam
having fixed ends.
2. Reduce beam span by using a span length = length
between face of gusset plates at end connections.
3. At center of beam span, consider increased plastic
modulus (Zx) due to presence of gusset plate (which
are provided to connect braces). Do this for ends of
beam span as well, if fixed ends are assumed for beam.

Thank you.

Dave
