It may seem silly to apply loads from two directions to the post until you see actual damage first hand as in Northrdge Earthquake.  The most common post failure was at corner post.
The usually pulled through the wood at the holdown connection.  If the bolt holes were oversized the damage was more severe.  That is one reason our company uses PHD holdowns when possible.
