RE: Frank Lloyd Wright

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
Dear Jim:

Let's see, the guy was:

* A deadbeat, nearly run out of town in every place he ever lived
* Had affairs with his clients' wives
* Abandoned his first wife and children to go to Europe with his mistress

Architecturally speaking:

* his projects traditionally came in horribly over budget
* His designs, while some of the most stunning ever built, were technically
VERY poor
(leaky roofs, sagging cantilevers, etc...)

Finally, while Falling Water is a beautiful, if terribly technically flawed
building, it's design concepts
Were based almost entirely on the work of the International Style architects
of DeStijl and the Bauhaus.

IMHO, Mr. Wright gets far more credit than he deserves in history; when
other, more original, talented architects such
As Mies, Gropius, Neutra, and Reitveld are barely known outside the
architectural community.

Sorry, this was supposed to be a "light topic"

My apologies,

Many Architects think Frank Lloyd Wright was a true visionary who could do
no wrong. What is your opinion of him and his accomplishments?

A light discussion topic for a Friday......
