RE: Strap Bracing for Metal Stud Wall

Bill,

Design of steel stud load bearing wall systems for lateral resistance falls under Division VIII section 2219 and 2220. Provisions of Division V (section 2212,2213,...) is for steel structures designed by AISC code (see 2212-General). Even the materials used for steel studs and straps are not covered there. In fact exception 2 of 2213.4.1 for materials allows you to use that kind of steel for light-framed wall systems, only in accordance with Division VIII. Section 2220 for design of these systems in seismic zones 3 and 4 requires the connection of diagonal bracing straps (and top chord splices, boundary members and collectors) to be designed for Omega_sub_0 times the seismic force (or the full tensile strength of strap) but does not require the same for the bracing straps. My 2 cents!
