Dear Gerard,

Consider biting the bullet and build a separate framework bearing
directly on the girders directly over the columns to support the new
units.  Maybe you could locate a group of them on this bay.  Remember to
keep it elevated enough to roof under - say 18" clear minimum.  That way
you are not accepting any responsibility for the original roof and its
associated deficiencies.
