:Subject: California's new Emergency Structural Amendments
:
:For those of you practicing in California
:
:You might be interested in knowing that new Emergency Amendments have
been
:published and are available for public. The amendments apply to the
state
:buildings under jurisdiction of Building Standards Commission (BSC).
While
:local jurisdictions are not mandated to adopt these provisions, BSC has
:strongly suggested their adoption to all Calfornia entities. The
amendments
:were compiled last summer through the efforts of the BSC staff and
:volunteers who served on an Ad hoc committee.
:
:The intent was to make available to the public a series of amendments
that
:would bring the 97 UBC more into alignment with current technology,
since
:we would stay on that code for the foreseeable future. Prior to that,
there
:were parallel efforts in LA and Bay area by local ICBO structural
:committees to the same thing. So, the State tried to bring consistency
and
:uniformity to the entire state by formulating these amendments. Some of
the
:highlights are:
:
:Adoption of the 97 AISC Seismic with supplement 2
:Adoption of 97 NDS
:Provisions for simplified approach to diaphragm rigidity issue
:Clarification of some load combinations
:New requirements for Ordinary Moment Frames
