Threaded rods can be extended to any length using coupling nuts.  Simpson Strong-tie catalog item CNW Coupler nuts are examples.
If you need to assure no change of length as the rod cycles thru zero load between tension and compression, or if you want to assure that there is no slack at a coupling, you need to tighten a jamb-nut against each end of the coupling nut in order to eliminate slack in the threads.  [I usually don't bother with this, but at times elimination of slack is important.]
