While the 8-hour California exam will test on the 2001 California Building Code, the 8-hour national portion of the SE exam will require reference to the 2000 IBC.
1.    Obtain FEMA 368 and 369, NEHRP Recommended Provisions for Seismic Regulations for New Building and Other Structures, (Provisions and commentary), 2000.
I'm not sure how this will affect anybody's leisure-time reading, but the 2000 IBC was actually based on the NHERP 1997 provisions.
The BSCC website has a 50 page document that discusses the difference between the 1997 and 2000 provisions.  For example,  the 2000 provisions reflect changes in ACI 318-99.
