RE: Strengthen wood beam -help

I recommend through-bolts, even if they're only 1/4" dia.  With your method,
you'll be resisting plate buckling of the top flange with the pullout
strength of the screws.  

There are formulas to calculate this, but I don't have my AISC seminar notes
with me.
