RE: IBC2000 1809.3.1 Auger Cast Piles

This is like trying to kill a virus. It should never have been in the Foundations section in the first place. The BSSC attempted to expunge it because it was a hold over from the concrete WSD days. The geotechs are also in the process of converting to a limit state design so these issues will disappear. This is the domain of ACI 318. ACI 318 has some additional requirements, but there is none of this allowable stress nonsense. It lives on in the IBC, but it is gone in the NEHRP, ASCE 7-02, and ACI 318-02. I thought that we had it eradicated. When the IBC just includes the ASCE 7 as the reference document, these hauntings from past sins should go away.

In the strict "thou shalt" code commandments, the provision is still alive. But the intent is to drive a stake through this vestige provision. The IBC 1809.3.1 was not written well and should have just referenced the ACI 318 years ago.

I have auger cast piles with seismic shear at the top and they also support the typical vertical loading from dead+live.

Should the allowable stress limits of IBC200-1809.3.1 apply to the combined effect of vertical stress + moment stress induced due to lateral loads also? It is going to be pretty tough for me to meet this provision if this is the intent.

I have a textbook that checks only the axial load stress and not the stress due to lateral moment. However, the IBC provision does not seem to exclude lateral moment in the stress limit check.
