The USDA Wood Handbook lists Mahogany as follows (Table 4-5b):

Shear Parallel to grain = 931 lbf/in^2            = 1,500
Side hardness = 640 lbf                           = 830
Sample origin = Africa

Mahogany, true (Swietenia macrophylla)

S.G. = 0.45                                       = Not reported
MOR = 9,000                                       = 11,500
MOE = 1.34 x 10^6                                 = 1.5 x 10^6

I have been asked to provide calculations to prove that a Mahogany
handrail is adequate for code prescribed loads (200# concentrated or 50
plf, etc).  Does anybody have any design values for any grade of
Mahogany?  I assume a handrail would be a higher grade of wood, but I'll
take whatever I can get.
