Here in Chi-town, we seem to refer to “handrails” as elements used

To protect/contain people and “guardrails” are used to protect/contain vehicles.

 

Also, its 20 plf on handrails for one and two family dwellings and 50 plf for multi

Family/public areas…

 

“guardrails” have a separate loading spec…
