Re: HSS vs WF columns

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
I should clarify: Both orders were for about a ton. The WF was for W12x58 and FOB at a local distributer (shipped in from Richmond, VA about 150-200miles LTL). The HSS was 6x3x.5 and 8x3x.375, shipped from Richmond to a local fab shop (maybe an extra 20 miles LTL). Steel was unprimed, no fab except cut to approx length, 3-4 pieces each order.

Until the most recent HSS order, I'd usually figured HSS at a 25-30% upcharge.  My welder relayed that the cost of HSS has kept rising as hot rolled shapes have stabilized.

Well, then, color me "surprised."

I'd have thought that the fabrication of HSS from flat sheet with an
auto-welded seam would be very comparable in price than hot-rolling used
to produced the WF shapes.

So, again, I'm surprised.
