RE: HSS vs WF columns

In 2001, Charlie Carter said that HSS was about 25% to 30% more expensive
than wide flange sections per pound.  I think that if the connections are
reasonably comparable, you can let appearance, the cost of fire protection
or painting be the deciding factor rather than the per pound cost of the
bare steel on most projects.

I would be surprised if the material cost for HSS columns (in reality, I
think you mean unit cost, e.g. "per pound") was significantly different
from WF given the means by which the HSS is fabricated.
