A few years ago, I tried to do a simple square root by
hand.  I'd forgotten how to do it.  I know it's not
hard, and I could relearn it easily ...

No real need to relearn, as long as you know how to multiply by hand. Just multiply the answer by iteself and see if you get the number your wanted to take the square root of.

The again, this may be a poor example.
