...how confident are you that you'll get a good contractor? It's one of the (few?) nice things about working for the (sub)contractor directly - I know when to trust them, and when to know they're likely to screw it up.

And you're exactly right: There IS no guarantee as to the quality of the contractor, because 90% or more of the time the contractor is selected based on low bid.
