Re: Valley Rafters

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
I've looked at my own house, and sure enough, if tit wasn't for the odd isolated prop the valleys would be long sagged.  There is even some negative deflection over the props.

Thanks

Valley beams are definitely design-worthy. Hip beams?.maybe not so much.

Rationale is the deflection (gravity) for valley rafters is detrimental to what?s below. Hip beams have all those nice rafters helping it along.

I would not, however, refer to either as a ?rafter?.

What would you consider "iffy"?  BTW I'm not just asking dumb questions here.  I'm putting together an engineer's retort to, "... Do we need such a large valley beam?  Can't we just stick frame it? ..."

Yes, since the member size/type will depend on the geometry and span of the valley rafter/beam.  Based on experience, I would determine if the span/load required a detailed calculation.  For standard stuff, I won't do a calculation but anything that is iffy I check it out.

And just to start ... does anyone design the valley rafter of a roof, or do you write it off as "standard framing"?  If not, why not?  If so, why?
