In my experience, deflection is usually the controlling factor for retrofitting wood floor systems.  How much stiffer does you solution make the floor?

A clever way to solve this problem is to strengthen the existing joists with CFRP.  We had a similar problem in a high school gymnasium where such retrofit increased the strength of the floor by over 60% without adding much weight to the floor.  The project won the 2004 Award of Excellence from the SEA of Arizona; you can find out more about it by visiting www.QuakeWrap.com  There was also an article that was published in the Feb 2004 issue of Structure Magazine and discusse the details of that project.
