Re: Demo Gehry buildings

Stan, I'm really sorry to hear both of your reports.  I always enjoyed seeing the huge metal mesh "Santa Monica" on the shopping center parking garage, and the view of the beach & ocean from the open air decks at the west end of the shopping center.

Regarding leaks, Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings sometimes leaked (and sagged) but no one suggested tearing them down because of that.  He famously commented that "the lady should move her soup dish" if the roof leak was a problem.  :)

He (FLW) also supposedly invited clients to lunch at an expensive restaurant and then sent them the bill for it.  The Wright stories go on forever.

For those who keep up with the well known architects, the University of Calif.,  Irvine campus is celebrating their 40th year and has also released news that they are about to demolish the Frank Gehry designed Computer Science/Engineering building built in 1986. School officials said "the building is really falling apart". Problems include dry rot and a leaking roof.
In Santa Monica, a 1983 Gehry designed shopping center is the subject of demo and redevelopment also, although it is still open.
