Some pertinent references...

The Canadian code S16.1-2001 paragraph 9.2.4 states
that "Twisting...displacements shall be prevented at
supports of a member or element unless accounted for
in design."

The AISC LRFD 3rd Ed. has a similar requirement in
para B6: "At points of support for beams, girders, and
trusses, restraint against rotation about their
longitudinal axis shall be provided."
