Has it been specified in any code that these type of columns should be avoided ?

As the column (STAR shape) may buckle because of lateral bending about one of the axis x or y ( perpendicular axis to the cross section). Hence, there are three critical values of the axial load as follows :
1) Causing lateral buckling in x direction
2) Causing lateral buckling in y direction
3) Torsional buckling

In general, torsional buckling is important for columns having wide flanges and short lengths.

I am in total agreement! A star section is very poor in torsion.

Years ago, we were adding on to an old industrial building that had star columns. A minor eccentric bump from a fork truck or small buggy could cause a column to twist and collapse.

Sub : Usage Of STAR Section In Steel Structures

This is regarding usage of STAR section in Steel Structures.

For forming the STAR section four equal angle / two equal angle (placed perpendicular to each other ) may be used. By using the STAR shape same moment of inertia may be achieved in both the direction across the cross section.

However, in my opinion, use of the same may be avoided as STAR sections ( thin wall open sections) may undergo torsion mode of buckling under the effect of pure axial compressive load.
