I will "dicker" a little with you. Other major material standards (ACI
318, NDS, ASCE 7, and the MSJC) are rougly half the price of the ACI
manual.  Member prices for ASCE 7-05 is $93.75; for ACI 318-05 is $95;
the 2005 MSJC (masonry code) is $71.25; and 2005 NDS is $25. That
compares with $175 member price for the 13th edition manual.

Well to be sure, you can get the 2005 AISC spec (and commentary) for
FREE, as a PDF download. So by your own standards, AISC offers the
better deal.

If you want to compare apples to apples, you will have to throw in a
whole bunch of ACI publications on top of 318, and then add those prices

For example, the AISC MSC gives you a boat-load of design tables,
calculation examples, and other design aids for columns, beams and

So let's assume that one-quarter of the ACI Manual of Concrete Practice
will give you the equivalent information. The MCP is $483 for the
six-volume printed set. A quarter of that is about $120, so it is less
than the $175 for the MSC, but not by much.

The kicker, of course, is that you can't "pick and choose" what
publications you want from the MCP without paying for the privilege. In
real dollars, I'm willing to bet that you're going to end up paying more
for the ACI publications you'd need to give you the equivalent
information for concrete design to what the MSC provides for steel.

N.B. You won't find ACI 318 as a free download on the ACI website.
That's a point to ponder.
