For the subject patio, the seismic load on each column will be about 400 lbs plus 3.2ft-k of moment, considering the height of 8'.  It looks like nothing in SST catalog will be able to take such abuse, especially, considering seismic in both directions.
 
Knee braces and heavier (bent) columns may work, but they need to be strapped.
I would also like to have the name of the city engineer - to ask for his review next time :).

I would not use anything less than 4x4 diagonal braces.
