Misunderstanding what is 'pushed against' is why the scientific editor of the New York Times pronounced rocket powered space flight an impossibility back in the 30's when Robert Goddard began his experiments.

The New York Times had published an editiorial against Goddard in January 13, 1920 as he lacked "the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools." On July 17, 1969 after Apollo 11 launched, they published "Further investigation and experimentation have confirmed the findings of Isaac Newton in the 17th century, and it is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum as well as in an atmosphere. The Times regrets the error."
