RE: Wind loading with axial forces on steel studs

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
ASCE 7-02 Section 6.5.12.1.3 only allows MWFRS pressures on components
and cladding if the tributary area of the component is greater than 700
sq. ft.

I always thought you could only use main frame pressures when your
tributary
area was large enough. I have designed load bearing steel stud walls
and
wood stud walls with components and cladding pressures and have spread
sheets
to figure the pressure based length and spacing.

Maybe this is too simplistic, but doesn't it just depend on the TA for
the
member? If that is the case, would the higher (localized) pressures be
used
for face loading, but lower (MWFRS) pressure be used for axial load?

I have it in my mind that when you are looking at combined loading on
wall
studs (wind pressure and axial loads), you don't have to use the C&C
pressures, but the MWFRS pressures. I have been going through ASCE
7-02 to verify this but can't find it. I remember Buddy Showalter
explaining
this for wood studs walls, does it appply to steel stud walls also?
