For some general information on Timber Cribs and design, check out pages 46 and 47 of the Caltrans Standard Plans.  My edition is January 1988.

The data contains info for timber crib walls from 4'-8" high through 22' high, plus it provides three design examples.  The nomograph provides foundation pressures for a 1:6 battered wall.

For 3 feet retaining level at top at your local Home Depot buy one of the stackable retaining wall products and put railroad ties in front if that is the look they want.
