Yes, the shear stresses are highest at the midpoint of the composite beam which need to be calculated and the weld designed accordingly.  Without running any numbers I would be surprised if a nominal stitch weld would not be sufficient.

If this is a beam, sure the horizontal stresses are low in locations where the vertical shear is low. But the horizontal stresses are high when the vertical shear is high and then, the stresses in the weld should be considered. If the welds do not have the required strength, they will not guarantee the behavior of the 2-HSS vertically stacked as a unit, and then, the whole capacity of the beam will be lower, and there will be no capacity gain stacking the HSS’s.

If I understand the layout here, you would be calling out a Flare-V Groove weld on each side which is certainly doable but would require a welding procedure (WPS) that is qualified by testing since I do not believe none are prequalified.  If this is a beam, the horizontal shear stresses should be low at the mid point so that should not be much of a problem.

Welding HSS



How well can two square HSS be welded side-by-side?  For example, can two 6x4 tubes be welded with longitudinal welds to create an overall 6x8 tube?  How detrimental are the rounded edges in this situation?
