Bill,

I don't know anything about UBC, but the new AISC code has formulas for calculating bracing forces. You can find the requirements in Appendix 6 of AISC 360-05 which is a free download on AISC's website if you don't have a copy of the newest steel manual yet.

Subject: UBC 1630.8.2.2.1.7 Bracing Load

In bracing the top and bottom flange of a steel beam, what force do I use to design the brace connection?
