Ethanol is a big agribusiness money grab. The only bright spot in the picture is that it has helped focus people on the fact that we need some kind of alternate in the wings because the fossil fuels will run out eventually as an economical alte, whether it's in 50 years or 500 years.
This may come as a big shock, but our society is propelled by money grabs. For better or for worse. Steve Jobs didn't produce the Apple II or Macs or iPods because he wanted to make this a better world, even though that's what happened (Sorry…OS bigotry…won't happen again ;->); he was looking to make money.

It may also come as a shock to learn that Brazil has made itself pretty much independent of foreign oil by developing biomass-based ethanol as an energy source. If we'd stuck to our guns after the 70's oil embargo, we'd be in the catbird seat ourselves.
