RE: Wind drift

[Subject Prev][Subject Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next]
Dunno if it's any help (I haven't looked into it) but there is a Web Seminar coming up soon; "Simplified Design of Wind Loads for Bldgs up to 160' in ht Using ASCE 7-05", that might answer/ address the issue. Log in and ask. And it's ONLY $250 per connection!! It's currently being promoted/ sponsored by SEAINT. Get details from your SEAINT Member Org. representative.

Side note: At ONLY $250 per connection, "Experts" are coming out of the woodwork to present these "webinars" (I very much dislike that word!). With no overhead (hotel, travel, materials, etc) that seems a bit much. Quite profitable, though! I may do one myself!

I am looking at the 1997 Wind Commentary for the UBC by the SEA of
Washington, its out of date but has a 4 page chapter that addresses this.
The newest version is for the 2003 IBC
http://www.seaw.org/resources_products.cfm I hope they put out a 2006
version soon.

It says the UBC did not address wind drift criteria because it was a
serviceabilty issue and in most cases earthquake loads govern (Not sure I
agree with this) and "it takes fewer stories of building height in regions
of low seismicity for wind loads to govern." They do have recommendations.

I don't think there is one. Story drift is given in the seismic provisions
of IBC/ASCE7.
