Dear members,

It is well known that actual seismic loads during earthquake can be several times design loads. Is it necessary to check stability of highrise buildings for several times design loads?

REPLY:

When loads are very large, but last for a very short time, then dynamic stability
is involved. This means that lateral inertia assists in resisting large axial load.
