Note, in the Beta formula .02 should be 0.2.

Re: Min. and Max. weld lengths

Jason,

For minimum and maximum fillet weld lengths see AWS D1.1 Section 2.3.2.3 and 2.3.2.5.  The minimum length of a fillet weld shall be at least four times the nominal size, or the effective size of the weld shall be considered not to exceed 25% of its effective length.  For end-loaded fillet welds with a length up to 100 times the leg dimension, it is allowed to take the effective length equal to the actual length.  When the length of  end-loaded fillet welds exceeds 100 but not more than 300 times the weld size, the effective length shall be determined by the reduction coefficient B (Beta):

B (Beta) = 1.2-.02(L/100w) <_ 1.0

B (Beta) = reduction coefficient

L = actual length of end-loaded weld

w = weld leg size

When the length exceeds 300 times the leg size, the effective length shall be taken as 180 times the leg size.

Min. and Max. weld lengths

Can anyone direct me to where or if there are requirements for the minimum and maximum length of a weld.  For example, if using a 1/4” fillet weld, what would be the min and max values?
